Hello, readers committed to a greener and more responsible future!

In this post, we will introduce you to a new methodology developed based on Brazilian legislation, which values efforts against deforestation and biodiversity protection. Enjoy the read!

In an ongoing effort to create innovative solutions in sustainability and conservation, Reservas Votorantim and the consultancy ECCON Soluções Ambientais introduced a groundbreaking standard for the carbon market: PSA Carbonflor. This launch took place during New York Climate Week, underscoring its global impact.

What is PSA Carbonflor?

Drawing from the Brazilian Law No. 14.119/2021, which acknowledges the significance of rewarding those championing environmental conservation, the PSA Carbonflor methodology focuses on valuing the interventionist effort that prevents deforestation and preserves biodiversity. Unlike previous methodologies, this new standard takes into account the true impact of climate change and conservation efforts, rather than merely focusing on avoided deforestation.

The first implementation of this methodology will be in Legado das Águas, the largest private Atlantic Forest reserve in Brazil. The potential is to generate 1.7 million Carbono Plus (C+) credits over a century, where each C+ represents the removal of one ton of CO2 from the atmosphere.

Why is this revolutionary?

Beyond focusing on true sustainability and conservation, the methodology offers a refreshed perspective on the value of environmental preservation. It centers on the actual value of ecosystem services, considering the effects of climate change on forests. For instance, even if a forest area isn't threatened by human deforestation, climate change effects can still lead to its degradation, a process known as savannization.

Community Involvement and Future Impact

This new methodology also emphasizes the importance of community inclusion and the use of advanced technology. The PSA Carbonflor approach was crafted with input from Embrapa and various global experts, and is now publicly available for adoption across different Brazilian biomes.

The decision to start with the Atlantic Forest underscores the urgency to conserve this vital biome, which is pivotal for water supply, microclimate regulation, and sustenance for many communities.

Note: Embrapa, or the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation, is a state-owned research institution affiliated with the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture. Since its establishment in 1973, Embrapa has been at the forefront of research, innovation, and technology transfer for sustainable agricultural development in Brazil. Its work has been pivotal in transforming Brazil's agriculture, making the country a major global food producer and exporter.

Conclusion

Here at Carbonseed, we are always attuned to innovations shaping the future of sustainability. The PSA Carbonflor methodology is a significant step towards a more holistic and integrated approach to carbon compensation and conservation. We are excited to witness the positive impacts it will bring to the industry and our planet.
